As you are reading my column this week, I am in the air on my way to sunny Florida for my wedding Sunday. I’m telling you, this time of year is the best time to travel. But, that’s not what I want to talk about this week.
I can remember shopping with my mother on numerous occasions when she would utter the phrase “I used to have (insert item of clothing) just like that.” And any fashionista will tell you that clothing trends, at some point, usually make some sort of comeback. I just never thought that I would see the day when a clothing style that I wore in my younger years would come full circle already.
I’m talking about the ’80s.
Now, I love the 80s. Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, Cinderella and, yes, New Kids on the Block, are still some of my favorite bands. And I always wondered if the decade’s clothing styles would ever come back. They have.
During several recent shopping outings, it dawned on me that the ’80s have come back in full force at malls everywhere, and I found myself reliving elementary and junior high school all over again. Acid washed jeans, fluorescent everything from sunglasses to T-shirts to earrings, and who could forget scrunchies? And I found myself saying “I used to have (insert item of clothing) just like that.”
Looking back, the ’80s were pretty awesome around here. A friend of mine posted the question “Does anyone remember Wheels of Eight?” on Facebook the other night, which prompted close to 40 comments. Did you cruise around the shopping center for entertainment, or hang out in the food court at the Uniontown Mall on Friday and Saturday nights? Did you have an Atari?
I would love to hear your responses, and use them for a SpinIt Weekend Magazine nostalgia piece on entertainment in Fayette County through the decades. And if the ’80s wasn’t your decade of choice, then let me know what your favorite decade was and what you used to do for fun.
