'Flashdance' debuts in Pittsburgh - 'what a feeling'

In honor the 30th anniversary of the original film, “Flashdance – the Musical” world premiere and national tour kicked off the 2013 musicals from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust with an explosion of music and dance. “Flashdance – The Music” is the stage adaptation of the 1983 hit film that truly defined a generation. Featuring popular hit songs like “I love Rock and Roll,” “What a Feeling” and “Maniac,” this show truly captured the hearts of fans young and old. Dance drives this music based on the story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and bar dancer by night. Of course no girl dreams of growing up to weld steel, Alex dreams of one day following her dancing feet as a professional dancer. Through our story, a romance with the boss threatens earning the dreams on her own and Alex is left with complicated decisions. Starring Emily Padgett (Alex) and Matthew Hydzik (Nick), the show is truly a hit in the making. This duo has some of the most believable chemistry on stage. We feel every beat of their heart throughout the show as they pine for one another in their romantic tale. Combined with the directing and choreography power of Sergio Trujillo (“Jersey Boys,” and “The Addams Family”), this show is sure to have a great run on tour and be a huge success nationally. While the entire cast is phenomenal on stage, one of the most surprising characters of the night was Dequina Moore and Kiki who truly commands the stage with her powerful voice and unbelievable talent. Of course, Moore is well complimented by Kelly Felthous as Gloria, Rachel Rak as Tess, Jo Ann Cunningham as Hannah and David R. Gordon as Jimmy. Each member brings something truly unique to the stage and together – their talents are unstoppable. If you missed your chance to catch the show in Pittsburgh, the show is touring nationally through June and July. You might find yourself planning your vacation around this once in a lifetime experience!
