NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. toured CONSOL Energy’s Enlow Fork Mine in Greene County, which is part of the Bailey Mine Complex in Greene County, on Oct. 2 and had the chance to see first-hand the state-of-the-art technology being deployed in today’s mining industry.

Earnhardt made a “pit stop” at Enlow Fork, which mines in southern Washington County, to learn more about the coal industry.

He was there in connection with the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity’s public awareness campaign.

“Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not only America’s most popular NASCAR driver, he’s also a powerful advocate for an American energy future powered by coal,” said Mike Duncan, president and CEO for the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity.

“America has more than two centuries of coal at its disposal, and we’re using it more cleanly and efficiently than ever before. The site of today’s tour with Dale Jr. – CONSOL Energy’s Bailey Mine, the world’s largest underground mine complex, and its cutting-edge Underground Training Academy – is a true marvel of modern engineering and represents the industry’s myriad pioneering innovations in the realm of safety and beyond.”

The Bailey Mine Complex, which consists of three mines, Bailey, Enlow Fork and BMX, and a prep plant, produces nearly 20 million tons of clean coal per year.

Last year, Enlow Fork produced 8 million tons.

Jimmy Brock, CONSOL Energy’s chief operating officer of coal operations, said the company’s coal mines are highly technical operating environments and the company is proud to show-off the advances it has made to help make the mining process safer and more productive.

“Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his team are one of the elite groups in racing and we are honored to host them,” Brock said.

“NASCAR is a great way for our industry to reach out to American families about the important role coal plays in delivering affordable power for the American economy. Many of our miners are NASCAR fans and it was a special day to host Dale Earnhardt Jr.

We are excited to have him here today to learn about how coal keeps electricity affordable, reliable and increasingly clean.”

Following the underground tour, the 19-time NASCAR winner signed autographs and spent time talking to CONSOL employees and other guests at the mine.

As a celebrity spokesperson for ACCCE, Earnhardt said he has learned a great deal about the importance of coal and its role in keeping energy costs low.

“As a business owner I appreciate the importance of clean coal. Coal is an essential fuel for electricity production and coal keeps electricity prices down,” Earnhardt said.

“America’s families and businesses rely heavily on affordable and reliable coal – from manufacturing to motorsports and everything in between.

I appreciate the opportunity to visit CONSOL Energy’s Enlow Fork mine and learn more about an industry that is so vital to our country.”

Welcome to the discussion.
