2011 Coal Queen and her court
Victoria Buchtan (middle) of Carmichaels Area High School was
named the 2011 Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Queen Sunday evening in
the Carmichaels Area High School auditorium. Buchtan is the
daughter of Albert and Vanessa Davidson Buchtan of Carmichaels. By
winning the title, she and her mother become the first
mother-daughter pair to hold the title. Vanessa Davidson Buchtan
was the 1983 Coal Queen. Making up the 2011 Coal Queen court were
(from left) third runner-up, Samantha Nuccetelli of
Bethlehem-Center High School; first runner-up, Skyler Matthews of
Uniontown High School; Buchtan; second runner-up, Mikayla Sonneborn
of West Greene High School; and fourth runner-up, Kourtney
Polvinale of Brownsville Area High School.

CARMICHAELS — The 58th Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Festival
resumed today with the State Mine Rescue competition at 8 a.m. at
the Carmichaels Area High School football stadium. This is the
first of three mining-related competitions that are held on three
consecutive mornings during the festival.
The State Mine Rescue competition challenges the skills
developed by mine rescue teams across the tri-state area that are
called into action in the event of a mine emergency.
Also today, the baby picture and Old King Coal contests will be
held in the Carmichaels fire hall and the carnival will open, with
DJ Dave Plavi performing from 7 to 10 p.m. The carnival will be
open through Saturday on the grounds of the Carmichaels Volunteer
