CARMICHAELS — The 58th Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Festival resumed today with the State Mine Rescue competition at 8 a.m. at the Carmichaels Area High School football stadium. This is the first of three mining-related competitions that are held on three consecutive mornings during the festival.
The State Mine Rescue competition challenges the skills developed by mine rescue teams across the tri-state area that are called into action in the event of a mine emergency.
Also today, the baby picture and Old King Coal contests will be held in the Carmichaels fire hall and the carnival will open, with DJ Dave Plavi performing from 7 to 10 p.m. The carnival will be open through Saturday on the grounds of the Carmichaels Volunteer Fire Department.
