California advanced in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament by sweeping Chowan (N.C.) Thursday at Hamer Hall.

Joanna Nist had a team-high 12 kills on .556 hitting percentage to lead the Vulcans (34-5). Ludmila Amaral had 10 kills with a .833 hitting percentage.

Ashley Moore had nine kills and three service aces as Julie Paronish posted seven digs and two service aces.

Chowan finished the season with a 29-9 record.

California faces Wheeling Jesuit today in the second round at Hamer Hall for a 7:30 p.m. start. Wheeling Jesuit advanced by sweeping Gannon 3-0.

Senior outside hitter Joanna Nist, senior setter Renata da Silva and senior middle hitter Ludmila Amaral were named to the first-team All-PSAC team on Thursday. Sophomore Bridget Bielich was named to the second All-PSAC team.

Nist was honored for the third time as da Silva has four such honors. Amaral and Bielich have been selected twice.

Nist led the conference with 3.86 digs per set and posted a .287 hitting percentage. She is among the school leaders with 1,836 kills and 1,528 digs.

A two-time All-American, da Silva led the conference with 11.20 assists per set and broke the school record this season. Her current total is 5,326 assists.

Amaral ranked third in the conference with 1.02 blocks per set along with a .319 hitting percentage.

Bielich averaged 2.45 kills per set and led the team with a .336 hitting percentage, which was third in the conference.

BOXING

Tommy Karpency, of Adah Pa., and Morgantown's Matt Berkshire will square off at the Chic~n~Bones Rhythm Cafe on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Bell time is 8 p.m.

Karpency, a light heavyweight, is 18-1-1 with 11 knockouts while junior middleweight Berkshire is 8-1-1 with three knockouts.

Football

The Tri-County South All-Conference team was announced recently. Monessen had the most players on the team with nine, followed by Beth-Center and Jefferson-Morgan with eight each.

Chuck Bowser, Dominic Faieta, Jordan Kinder, Tyler Miller, Matt Schneider, Zander Shashura, Jake Sofran and Frank Vorhes represented Beth-Center on the team.

Selections from Jefferson-Morgan include Taylor Barchiesi, Derek Haiden, Thomas Jordan, Ryan Knight, Hans Lubich, Brent Moskola, Josh Schinkovec and David Sisler.

Kody Decker, Zach Doman, Anthonie Farrar, Jonathan Krall, Seth Krall and Zach Mundell were chosen from Carmichaels.

Dakota Conway, D.J. Martinak, Preston Shaw, Wade Stinnett and Brad Tonini were honored for their efforts with California.

Geibel Catholic had four selections, including two running backs as Hudnell Caldwell, Christian Henckel, George Morrel and Brennan Sopko garnered all-conference honors.

The passing combination of Cory Minnick and Jarett Porterfield made the team from Mapletown, along with fellow receiver William Cox.

West Greene's Curtis Jones and Dillon Main round out the team. Monessen won the conference and its coach, Andy Pacak was chosen as the coach of the year.
