Uniontown Area School Board failed to reach a consensus to hire a new business manager Thursday during a special meeting.

Dr. Charles Machesky, district superintendent, said the item was removed from the agenda, noting no agreement on a replacement for the current business manager could be reached.

Board directors held an executive session prior to the meeting to interview and discuss possible applicants.

"All candidates were outstanding, but no consensus was reached at this time," Machesky said.

The new business manager will replace Joseph Nepa, who resigned from the position after one year with the district. Last month, the board passed a motion to pay Nepa $370 a day on a part-time basis to assist the board until a new manager is hired.

On Thursday, Machesky said that Nepa has been working two days a week for the Uniontown district.

"He's been doing a great job, but he has other employment which makes it tough," Machesky said.

Nepa has returned to the Bethlehem-Center School District.

At last month's meeting, Machesky had presented the board with resumes from applicants who had applied for the position when Nepa was hired. Machesky said that all the applicants have business manager experience in public school settings.

Machesky said he did not know if the board would be able to reach a consensus about any one candidate already interviewed or when the district could see a replacement for the position.

Directors Lloyd Williams and Kenneth Meadows were absent from the meeting.

In other business, the board voted to accept the resignation of Karen Wade as an art teacher assigned to Franklin, Menallen and Wharton schools effective July 19.

Directors also accepted the resignation, due to retirement, of Gail R. Carlins as a music teacher assigned to Benjamin Franklin School effective the last day of the 2009-10 school term.

"She has been here 34 years," Machesky said. "We wish her best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement."

The board will meet again at 6 p.m. Aug. 6 for a work session at the Central Administration building. The regular meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16 in the high school band room.
