Sports physicals
The Albert Gallatin Athletic Department has scheduled senior high fall sports physicals for Wednesday in the Albert Gallatin Senior High School nurse’s office.
Players are being advised that all paperwork must be completed prior to receiving a physical. Physical forms may be picked up at the senior high main office or downloaded from the high school website under athletics.
A time schedule has been set for each sport, they are as follows: Varsity and 9th grade football 8 to 8:45 a.m; boys cross country, 8:45 to 9 a.m.; boys soccer, 9 to 9:20 a.m.; boys golf, 9:20 to 9:45 a.m.; girls cross country, 9:45 to 10 a.m.; girls volleyball, 10 to 10:20 a.m.; and cheerleaders, 10:20 to 11 a.m.. There will be a $10 fee charged for the cost of the physical. A check or money order will be accepted and can be made payable to the Albert Gallatin School District. The middle school physicals were held last week.
Maldovan reunion
The Maldovan family reunion will be held Saturday at Monview Park beginning at noon. Family and friends are invited to bring a covered dish to the luncheon. Auction items would also be appreciated.
Benefit concert
A benefit concert with “American Band” will be held to benefit a 3-year-old girl stricken with cancer. The dance will be held at the Masontown VFW, 115 River Ave., Masontown, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Aug. 12. Admission is $3. Refreshments and small games of chance will be available. The public is invited to attend.
Car show/dinner
St. Mary Church in Leckrone will hold a stuffed chicken breast dinner at the parish center during the annual car show today from noon to 5 p.m. Cost for the dinner is $8. Oldies music during the car show will be provided by disc jockey Arnie Amber. Dash plaques will be awarded for the first 50 cars registered. The registration donation is $8. Trophies and door prizes will be awarded and a 50/50 drawing will be held.
St. Mary Church is located on Leckrone/High House Road, approximately two miles off of Route 21 at the Detweiler’s/Sweet Pea’s intersection stoplight east of Masontown.
Farmers’ market
The Masontown farmers’ market will be held at the German-Masontown Park from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday.
Library news
The German-Masontown Public Library will offer an eReader information session in the near future. Anyone interested in purchasing an eReader, this is the information session for you. The advantages and perks of the Kindle, the Nook, and the iPad2 will be discussed. Program participants will have the opportunity to compare eReaders and ask questions of experts in the field.
This opportunity is a one-time only program available at a mere $5 per person. Anyone wishing to participate is asked to call the library at 724-583-7030 as soon as possible as space is limited.
Registration is still being taken for the Resume Workshop. Call the library to register; there is no charge for this program.
New library
German-Masontown Public Library seeks volunteers to assist with the upcoming move. The library is moving right behind the present building to 104 S. Main St. in Masontown, right next door to Parkvale Bank.
Anyone able to lift 50 pounds or more, put together furniture, put books on shelves, or collapse used boxes; is asked to call the library as soon as possible to sign up to volunteer. The move in date is rapidly approaching and it would be appreciated of any help that community members can offer.
The library will be closed now through Sept. 5. It will reopen on Sept. 6 in the new location. Details about the grand opening will be announced.
Pal’s Ladies Auxiliary
The Pal’s Club Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Pal’s Club Social Hall. Committee chairman is Cheryle Morris and Donna Ondrejko. Clara Chetosky will donate the $5 gift.
Yard sale
Start collecting valuables for the Sept. 17 Community yard sale.
A free interactive map will be available on the Masontown Matters web page to list locations and items available.
Meeting scheduled
The next Masontown Matters meeting is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. at the VFW on River Avenue in Masontown.
Friends of Library
Friends of the German-Masontown Library will hold its annual picnic at noon Monday at the Masontown German Park.
Each member is asked to bring a covered dish, and also their own table settings and beverage. Games are being planned and if you choose to participate, bring a $1 gift to help provide prizes for the winners.
All members of the Masontown and Smithfield libraries are invited to join in a fun afternoon.
Polka Mass/Bazaar
St. Mary’s Church in Leckrone will hold its annual church bazaar from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 14. Music will be provided by “The Vibrations.” The Slovak platter being served will feature pierogies. Other food items available will be holupki, haluski, breaded chicken, and assorted sandwiches and snacks. The day will be filled with music, food, fun and games.
The public is invited to attend.
Community Kitchen
The next Masontown Community Kitchen will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The meal will be everyone’s favorite, homemade spaghetti, salad, Panera Breads and desserts.
During the evening, blood pressure tests will be done at anyone’s request at no cost.
The Community Kitchen is held in the First Presbyterian Church at 102 W. Church Ave. Hot, nutritious meals are free to everyone and are served every other Tuesday along with a generous helping of Christian fellowship and hospitality. Donations are gratefully accepted and are used for future meals.
The Community Kitchen relies on the generosity of the churches, individuals and various organizations in the area who volunteer to help cook, serve and clean for the soup kitchen. Volunteers are an essential part of the local mission which has made possible, its six-year success. Class of 1981
The Albert Gallatin High School Class of 1981 will hold a reunion planning meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jordan’s Auto Center in Masontown.
