Library news

During these tough economic times, it is hard to find something that has better value than a library card. It costs nothing to sign up for a library card at German-Masontown Public Library, and the rewards of using one are many. First, you have access to the latest bestsellers in print or in ebook form. Secondly, you have access to public computers as well as wireless Internet service.

And finally, you will be able to take advantage of the many free programs available at the library, including movie night (Monday at 4:30 p.m.), storytime (Wednesdays at 10:30) and knitting (Thursdays at 3:30). If you have a 4-year-old at home, you might want to sign up for our preschool time starting Oct. 16. A tour of the library will be held Oct. 15.

For more information, call German-Masontown Public Library at 724-583-7030.

Community Kitchen

The next Masontown Community Kitchen will be held on Tuesday. Homemade chicken pot pie, desserts with peaches and Panera Breads will be served along with hospitality and Christian fellowship. The meal begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m., when volunteers from many of the local churches wash dishes, sweep floors and prepare for their next bi-weekly dinner. Freewill donations from those attending and contributions from many other sources have kept this mission open and helping the needy for the last seven years.

Recently, a car show and cruise was held in Masontown sponsored through the combined efforts of the Family Dollar, Subway and Route 21 Pizza Hut. Dusty Joe’s Discs hosted the show and raised money, which was given to the Community Kitchen for food and needed supplies. Jonathan Hatsek, manager of the Family Dollar Store who organized the show, said that he hopes to hold the event annually and was very glad to help the soup kitchen. Pizza Hut’s Karen Saletrick gave out pizza to those attending the car show. She commented that the restaurant is always willing to be involved with such local activities and looks for next year’s show to be even better. Mark Scott, owner of the Subway, donated funds, which added to the total money raised for the soup kitchen.

The Community Kitchen provides meals every other Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church located at 102 W. Church Ave. in Masontown. Information is available by calling Kathy West at 724-583-9514. Volunteers are needed and always welcomed to help in the kitchen. Call Judy Julian at 724-943-3013 for scheduling.
