Uniontown library upgrades online card catalog database

By Lynne E. Tharan 3 min read

Oops! I erred in my column two weeks ago when I told you our first Summer Reading Program would be held on Thursday, June 13. It was not that day but this week on Thursday. The event will feature our all-time favorite, Doc Dixon. He delights both children and adults, so don’t miss him. Also, you can register your child or children for the Summer Reading Program while here.

While we’re talking about our amazing summer programs, I want to thank some folks who make it all possible for the Uniontown Public Library to put on such a phenomenal summer event. We thank St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Friends of the Library, Dollar General Stores, Sheetz, The Maxx, Duck Hollow Discovery Learning Center, The Community Foundation of Fayette County, Linda Jennings, McDonalds, Lorraine Jones, Doris Coldren, Rose Ann Joseph, Melba Gillingham, Chris Bryan, Lynn’s Dairy Queens, WalMart and those individuals who contributed to “Ten to Spend.”

This summer in the children’s room, we are welcoming two ladies who will be assisting Miss Dianne. Look for Linda Jennings and Mary Pace during the week helping patrons register children, find books, check out your books, hand out prizes and answer questions.

If you are a regular library user, you know our Polaris circulation system was down for a while, and when it came back to us, there were many glitches to be fixed. We resolved many, but there are still some that we’re working on. Thank you for your patience. We’ve cancelled all fines incurred from May 31 through June 26; we’ll be charging fines once again.

One plus of the Polaris upgrade is that now, from your home computer, you can go to our website, www.uniontownlib.org, to access the card catalog and place a request for a book. Now, through, if we do not have the book or if our copy is out, you can still place a request that will be filled right away by another library in our system that owns the book. The book will be sent to us on the delivery van for you to pick up here at the Uniontown Public Library. While this library has the largest and finest book collection not only in Fayette County, but in the southwest area of Pennsylvania, we cannot have very book you might want, so this new service will help you find just what you need.

Also, if you use OverDrive, let us know if you are having problems.

Are you a fan of Pittsburgh baseball? Want tickets for a game at a reasonable price? Stop in the library and pick up a form to order tickets for the July 30 double header between the Pirates and the Cardinals. Last day to order tickets is June 28, so hurry.

Come see us in the library, enjoy Doc Dixon and request a book.

“They (librarians) are subversive. You think they’re just sitting there at the desk, all quiet and everything. They’re like plotting the revolution, man. I wouldn’t mess with them.” — Michael Moore
