German-Masontown Library
This week is Banned Books Week, an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information. It brings together the entire book community, including librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers and readers of all types in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
First observed in 1982, Banned Books Week reminds Americans not to take the freedom to read for granted. Since 1990, the American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom has received reports of 9,500 attempts to remove books deemed by some as inappropriate. The most challenged books in the past year have been the children’s series of books, “Captain Underpants” by Dav Pilkey, as well as the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy by E. L. James.
Want to celebrate the freedom to read with German-Masontown Public Library? Stop in and peruse our display of banned or challenged books, and check out one to read.
