Uniontown to host Pa Literary Festival, library prepares for summer reading

By Casey Sirochman 3 min read

A unique opportunity will happen May 30 through June 1, when the first annual Pennsylvania Literary Festival will be held at the Uniontown Mall.

The Lit Fest aims to engage and inform attendees concerning literary achievements, opportunities and educational programs within the state and surrounding areas by assembling publishers, authors, libraries, schools, literary agencies, reading associations, book clubs and the general public.

This free event features industry exhibitors, author appearances, signings, readings, live music, a charity auction, cooking demos, free writing and publishing workshops, storytellers, writing contests, activities for kids, live tapings and interviews with Fayette TV (FCTV) and Going LIVE and a variety of food and beverages spread throughout multiple locations within the Uniontown Mall.

PA Lit Fest welcomes John Dixon as its keynote speaker. John’s debut novel, “Phoenix Island,” inspired the CBS series “Intelligence,” starring Josh Holloway and Marge Helgenberger.

Prior to the festival, students in kindergarten through 12th grade can participate in an essay contest presented by the Fayette Chamber of Commerce.

Prizes will be awarded for winners in each age division, plus there will be an opportunity to be featured during a press conference at a state-wide festival and at libraries across the state. Registration packets including detailed scoring information are available online at palitfest.com/kids/contests/.

With summer around the corner, the Carnegie Free Library staff is preparing for our youth and teen summer reading programs.

The theme for this year is “Science — Fizz! Boom! Read!” Kick off your summer at our backyard carnival on June 18, and enjoy the other special programs on the following Wednesdays. Full schedule of events will be available later in May.

This free program will run every Wednesday at 11 a.m. every Wednesday from June 18 through Aug. 6. All children ages 2 through 12 are welcome. Free lunch will be provided to youth after each weekly event sponsored by Champion Christian School through the Summer Feeding Program.

If you are entering seventh grade in the fall, you might want to join our teen summer program instead!

You will be able to register online beginning May 19 at carnegiefreelib.org. Any teens (or adults) looking for volunteer opportunities or community service hours are welcome to participate as aides for this program.
