Fundraisers

n Fayette Friends of Animals car, truck, bike, tractor, rat rod show, today, Fairchance Volunteer Fire Department, Route 857, Fairchance. n National Road Heritage Corridor’s ninth annual Frontier Dinner, 6 p.m. Sept. 5, Christian Klay Winery, National Road, Chalk Hill. The menu, prepared by chef Joe Carei, will feature locally grown and raised fruit, vegetables and proteins including duck confit spring rolls, tomato vegetable soup, lobster shooters, braised rabbit au vin, rice and grain medley with fresh herbs, New Meadow Run Peach Cobbler and more. n The Community Foundation of Fayette County (CFFC) is accepting grant applications for the Foundation’s upcoming grant cycle. Applications must be post-marked by Aug. 29. Eligible organizations must be non-profit (recognized under Section 501 (c)(3) or equivalent, of the I.R.S. Code), tax-exempt, and located in Fayette County. Requests of up to $5,000 will be accepted. Funding is focused on, but is not limited to, the following areas: Arts and Culture, Education, Community Development, Health and Human Services, and Destructive Decision Awareness. n During September Penn State Extension in Fayette, Greene and Washington counties will accept applications for the 2014-15 Penn State Master Gardener program. Classes will be held at the local Extension offices in each of the respective counties. Program fee covers cost of training materials and expenses. n Bullskin Township Historical Society will host a writer’s contest. The group is looking for writers who love to report and share true historical happenings. Historical stories must be limited to 650 words and be about a person, place or thing in Fayette County’s past. First prize is $100, second prize is $50 and third prize is $25. Deadline is Sept. 25. Winners will be announced Oct. 18 at the Bullskin Township Historical Society’s Heritage Days Festival. n Nathanael Greene Community Development Corporation is sponsoring a day trip to the family friendly Apple Butter Festival in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia on Oct. 11 The festival, which started in 1974, features games, contests, music, fine art, local crafts and food as well as apple butter, made in the middle of town in giant copper kettles. Summer reading

n German-Masontown Public Library summer reading program registration is currently under way. The program “Fizz, Boom, Read!” is open to elementary school students 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. For middle and high school students, there reading competition continues through August.

There will also be trophies awarded, door prizes, raffles and oldies music by disc jockey Arnie Amber. n The Crime Victims’ Center of Fayette County offers age-appropriate programs on various topics that are available from ages 3 through adult.
