n National Road Heritage Corridor’s ninth annual Frontier Dinner, 6 p.m. Sept. 5, Christian Klay Winery, National Road, Chalk Hill. The menu, prepared by chef Joe Carei, will feature locally grown and raised fruit, vegetables and proteins including duck confit spring rolls, tomato vegetable soup, lobster shooters, braised rabbit au vin, rice and grain medley with fresh herbs, New Meadow Run Peach Cobbler and more. n Knit-a-Bit group, 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays, German-Masontown Public Library. All ages and abilities of needle workers are invited to bring their current crochet or knitting project.
n The Community Foundation of Fayette County (CFFC) is accepting grant applications for the Foundation’s upcoming grant cycle. Applications must be post-marked by Friday. Eligible organizations must be non-profit (recognized under Section 501 (c)(3) or equivalent, of the I.R.S. Code), tax-exempt, and located in Fayette County. Requests of up to $5,000 will be accepted. Funding is focused on, but is not limited to, the following areas: Arts and Culture, Education, Community Development, Health and Human Services, and Destructive Decision Awareness. n Fayette County “hard-to-recycle” drop-off event, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13, Wharton Township Municipal Building, Route 381, Farmington. Items accepted at the event include: used oil and kerosene, used old passenger and light truck tires at $1.50 per tire, large steel appliances at $2 each, electronic items $5 for each computer and $1 or $2 for other items. n First annual senior celebration, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3, 150 Coolspring St., Uniontown. The event is sponsored by the East End United Community Center.
n During September Penn State Extension in Fayette, Greene and Washington counties will accept applications for the 2014-15 Penn State Master Gardener program. Classes will be held at the local Extension offices in each of the respective counties. Program fee covers cost of training materials and expenses. n Bullskin Township Historical Society will host a writer’s contest. The group is looking for writers who love to report and share true historical happenings. Historical stories must be limited to 650 words and be about a person, place or thing in Fayette County’s past. First prize is $100, second prize is $50 and third prize is $25. Deadline is Sept. 25. Winners will be announced Oct. 18 at the Bullskin Township Historical Society’s Heritage Days Festival. n Nathanael Greene Community Development Corporation is sponsoring a day trip to the family friendly Apple Butter Festival in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia on Oct. 11 The festival, which started in 1974, features games, contests, music, fine art, local crafts and food as well as apple butter, made in the middle of town in giant copper kettles. Summer reading
n German-Masontown Public Library summer reading program registration is currently under way. The program “Fizz, Boom, Read!” is open to elementary school students 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. For middle and high school students, there reading competition continues through August.
n Carnegie Free Public Library adult summer reading program “Literary Elements,” noon to 1 p.m. every other Saturday (started June 14), at the library. Adults are invited to read for prizes and to participate in discussion of the weekly themes, including climate change, DNA testing, forensics and more. Car cruises
n Weekly Car cruises will be held from 6-9 p.m. every Friday through September at the Uniontown Shopping Center (weather permitting). Cruises also will be held every Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. at Sonics, located across from the Uniontown Walmart (weather permitting). Disc jockey Arnie Amber will provide musical entertainment.
n St. Francis of Assisi Parish car show, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Footedale. Dash plaques for the first 50 cars registered. There will also be trophies awarded, door prizes, raffles and oldies music by disc jockey Arnie Amber. There will also be pasta and a salad bar at the Footdale Social Hall from noon to 5 p.m. Information: 724-437-8291.
n Old-Fashion Car Show and hog roast, 11 a.m. Sept. 7, Firemen’s Field, McClellandtown. Registration is by donation and the first 150 will receive a dash plaque. There is no admission fee for spectators. All registered vehicles will be entered in a drawing for a 32″ television. There will also be a Chinese auction, drawing, a variety of food including the “hog” sandwich and music by Joe’s Dusty Disc. Flea market vendors for vehicle parts only are invited. Volunteers needed

n Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA is looking for people to serve as point person for specific communities. n The Crime Victims’ Center of Fayette County offers age-appropriate programs on various topics that are available from ages 3 through adult.
