Give-A-Christmas climbs to $4,420
The spirit of giving thanks has extended beyond the national holiday this year, as Sparkle, the Christmas Star, reports that the 2014 Give-A-Christmas fund has jumped to $4,420 in just one day.
“It warms my heart to see us off to such a great start to get to our goal this year of raising $50,000,” said Sparkle, who is mascot for the HeraldStandard.com campaign that benefits the Salvation Army. “We have received donations from several areas of the district. Remember that the money raised in those areas will go to the Salvation Army units that serve those communities so readers are helping their own neighbors through the campaign.”
Donations came from Uniontown, New Salem, Dunbar, Elco and Connellsville.
“God bless you all for what you do to help those in need,” said Jean Young Grover of Dunbar, who sent a nice note with her donation, in memory of dad Albert Young, mom Winnie Young, sister Darlene Young, brother William Young, and husband Dean Grover.
Today’s other donors include Frank and Alfreda Marhefka of Uniontown, in memory of Frank Marhefka, Jr.; Joanne Jordan of New Salem, in memory of granddaughter Heather Lynn Garbutt; Elizabeth Gaydos of Uniontown; Doris Gismondi of Uniontown, in memory of Ralph; James Newman of Uniontown, in memory of parents William and Inez Newman, best friend Gerald DeBolt and little buddy Bandit, and in honor of sisters Barbara Digiovine, Gail Mack, Cheryl Dietz, and friends Robert and Cindy Harper and little buddy Lance; Bob and Vee Shutty of Uniontown, in memory of Joe and Madeline Shutty, Frank Kordella and Frosty Shutty; Norma Boyd-Doyle of Connellsville, in memory of husband Gerald A. Doyle, parents William H. and Margaret J. Martis, and brother Billy; Linda Evon of Creative Designs & Expressions of Elco; Deloris Eilliott of New Salem; and the Juniata United Methodist Church Endowment Fund in Dunbar.
This is the 29th year for Give-A-Christmas. Funds are distributed to branches of the Salvation Army in the Herald-Standard readership area.
The money that readers contribute is given to the branch of the Salvation Army that serves the area where they live, but readers can designate their funds go to any of the branches. There is no sharing of funds.
Donations will continue to be accepted until noon Dec. 23. The final amount will be reported in the Christmas Eve edition of the Herald-Standard.
Donations can be mailed to Give-A-Christmas, P.O. Box 1147, Uniontown, PA 15401 or brought to the Herald-Standard office in Uniontown from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Sparkle cans also have been placed in numerous store locations in the Herald-Standard distribution area.
