On Nov. 17, Margaret Benya of Uniontown celebrated her 100th birthday.

She was born in 1914 to parents John and Elizabeth Roebuck in Shadygrove.

Benya married Adam Benya, and the couple had one child Adam Benya Jr. who also currently lives in Uniontown.

Benya held a number of jobs before her retirement.

“The last place she worked and where she retired from was Fashion Hosiery,” said Adam Benya, Jr. “It was downtown Uniontown at one time. When it finished up it was at the Uniontown Mall. She was a salesperson.”

She was also involved with various local social organizations.

“She belonged to a ladies auxiliary at the AMVETS out in Hopwood,” said Adam Benya, Jr. “She belonged to the Moose Club in Uniontown because my dad was the treasurer from about 1955 to 1965 for about 10 years.”

In addition to her employment and involvement with local organizations, Benya was also known for her kindness.

“She was very generous. When some people (where victims of a fire) she would always give them something like dishes,” said Adam Benya, Jr.

Benya would often spend herfree time in her flower garden or kitchen.

“She liked to cook and bake,” said Benya. “I liked the pierogis. She used to make pierogis. She would make really good nut rolls around the holidays like Easter and Christmas.”

This year’s birthday was marked with a visit by a few family members.
