Fairchance churches featured in holiday tour
The Community Alliance of Christian Women is hosting its sixth annual tour of Fairchance churches decorated for Advent and Christmas this Sunday beginning at 3 p.m.
“We are trying to showcase Jesus Christ in our lives — that’s number one — and invite everyone to see the glory and beauty of the churches during the holiday season,” said Nan Chess, who noted, “I don’t think there’s anything more splendid than churches at Christmastime.”
Open to the public with no charge, the tour features seven churches, starting at Fairchance Free Methodist Church, located at 53 S. Morgantown St. It continues on to First Presbyterian Church, 114 W. Church St.; Trinity United Methodist Church, 27 N. Main St.; Church of the Brethren, 17 Gallatin Ave.; Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 135 N. Morgantown St; Ss. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church, 50 N. Morgantown St., and ends at First Baptist Church of Fairchance, 17 N. Morgantown St., where light refreshments will be served.
Rosella Collins said the churches have remained the same, but the first and last churches are rotated each year so each takes a turn at serving refreshments, which include cookies baked by members of all the churches.
Each church offers a greeting and will showcase a talent, have a reading or sing carols during the visit. The event lasts about an hour and a half.
During the tour, participants will walk to each church in a group, singing carols along the way, noted Collins. But many drive if they have trouble walking the tour or if the weather is inclement.
“It’s a wonderful experience,” said Collins. “I think it’s a good way to start the holiday season and it brings the community together.”
