North Union Township approves 2015 budget
North Union Township supervisors unanimously voted to approve their 2015 budget.
During Tuesday’s regular meeting, supervisors adopted the budget of $2,690,500 that would keep the real estate tax rate at 0.447 mills, equaling $44.70 per $100,000 of assessed property value.
Supervisor Robert Tupta said this is the 56th year that the rate has remained the same.
In other news, supervisors also agreed to sign a one-year contract with Hoffman Kennels for the township’s animal control.
“I think we’ve been receiving a professional service so far, and we’ve only had them for a few months. Everything so far has been done in a timely manner,” said Tupta about the Delmont-based business. Supervisors had signed a temporary contract with Hoffman after the Fayette SPCA closed its doors in September.
The new contract will be for $400 per month for 12 months beginning in January.
In other business, supervisors also issued an annual winter weather condition statement.
“If it’s a light snowfall, we’re just going to treat the roads and should be done in 3-4 hours. But if it’s a snowfall, where there’s 1.5 inches or more, it’s going to take longer. And if it’s a snowstorm, we’ll do our best to get to the secondary roads, but the primary roads come first,” said supervisor Thomas Kumor.
Kumor also advised residents not to park on the roads or near intersections when the snow is heavy and plow trucks needs to be out.
Supervisors also addressed several complaints that the code enforcement officer has received.
“Garbage left outside for pickup is to be in a garbage can. The animals are out tearing them apart and getting it all over people’s yards,” said Tupta.
He added that there have been complaints about vehicles in the township with expired plates and stickers.
“If you have them, you need to scrap them out, sell them or garage them,” said Tupta.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 13 at 3:30 p.m. at the municipal building.
