For its second year, the Christmas Walking Tour of Uniontown Churches will take place on Dec. 28.

During its inaugural year, the tour introduced about 60 people to the interior of some of the churches in the downtown Uniontown area.

“The goal (of the tour) originally started out, I believe, to open our doors so that these churches, that people see everyday and drive passed everyday and they are curious as to what goes on inside, they will see this is a real place with live people who are welcoming,” said Meg Thompson, secretary at Trinity United Presbyterian Church.

This year’s tour will start at 1:30 p.m. at Central Christian Church, 23 South Gallatin Ave., Uniontown. People are invited to park in the church’s parking lot and leave their cars because Central Christian which will serve as the final church on the tour because they will host a light meal to conclude the event.

Participating churches for this year include Christ United Methodist, Asbury United Methodist, Uniontown Church of the Brethren, Trinity United Presbyterian and St. Peter’s Anglican.

This year, tour participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the individual churches through presentations at each of the locations.

“We just go into the sanctuary and everyone sits down and looks around the church,” said Thompson. “This year we are doing an emphasis on music. Each church will do a 10 minute presentation on something.”

For those who are unsure about walking the tour, they will be able to drive or carpool to the various churches.

“I think Central Christian, again, will offer their van. A lot of people carpooled to a lot of the locations. So if someone is planning on driving, it won’t be a problem at all,” explained Thompson.

In addition to putting people in the holiday spirit, Thompson hopes that the tour will also provide some comfort to people this holiday season.

“Especially during Christmas time, some people are hurting. The Christmas season tends to bring that out,” said Thompson. “Sometimes, it is really hard to walk into a church service for the first time and you are alone. This (the tour) is an avenue where you are not attending a church service and nothing is expected of you. It is just a tour. That way, it might inspire people to visit later because they are not intimidated anymore.”
