Connellsville Polar Bear Club prepares to take the annual plunge
The Connellsville Polar Bear Club is getting ready to savor its 11th annual plunge into the Youghiogheny River on New Year’s Day.
Revelers of all ages are invited to take part in this year’s jump and make a mad dash at 11 a.m. into the icy water.
“You never really get used to it…especially the first year we didn’t know what to expect,” said Frank Jacobyansky, who, along with his wife, Nancy, has organized the jump since its inception.
According to Jacobyansky, about 40 people came out during the first jump, which has since grown to more than 500 people.
“It’s become a tradition here,” said Jacobyansky. “We always wanted to keep it family friendly.”
Jacobyansky recalled last year’s temperature was about 35 degrees with light snow while the river had a layer of ice on top in 2010 in which several holes had to be cut.
“We line up on the river bank, count down and then (people) run in and scream,” said Jacobyansky.
Jacobyansky said people generally run in and out of the water quick. “It takes your breath away.”
While about one-third of participants are from Connellsville, Jacobyansky said others come from the neighboring towns of Scottdale, Mount Pleasant and Greensburg along with some from Pittsburgh.
“We had some from Australia that were visiting people,” Jacobyansky added. “We draw from a pretty good area.”
Jacobyansky said each year something different is added to the jump to make it fun for those participating.
Last year, there was music while this year Jacobyansky said he is hoping to have a bonfire where people can roast hot dogs and kielbasi.
Also, Fox Castle Bed and Breakfast on Pittsburgh Street is offering its guests a New Year’s package that includes taking the plunge.
“Jumping in the river is secondary at this point,” said Jacobyansky. “It’s (about) seeing friends and having fun.”
