Give-A-Christmas breaks through $20,000 mark
With just one day left to give to the Herald-Standard’s Give-A-Christmas fund, the total reached $20,494 after readers donated $675 to the campaign that supports the Salvation Army in this area.
“This effort is so important because the Salvation Army helps many of our neighbors in need,” said Sparkle, the Christmas Star, who is the mascot of the campaign. “But I’m a little disheartened that our goal of $50,000 may not be reached. Those funds are desperately needed and the campaign ends tomorrow at noon.”
A fundraiser held by Uniontown Area High School students raised money for the annual campaign.
Over 100 students participated in a dodgeball tournament at the high school and with the help of local U.S. Army recruits, $600 was raised for Give-A-Christmas.
A donation and a note wishing “Happy Holidays to all” from Joyce Staub of Uniontown who gave in memory of her husband Paul and in honor of her grandchildren, Talia, Brianna, Alexandra, Travis, Zoey, Madison, Riley, Madigan, Ella and Laney.
“We donate this in celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary,” wrote Kenneth and Bonnie Schrock of Vanderbilt.
Donations will continue to be accepted until noon Tuesday. The final amount will be reported in the Christmas Eve edition of the Herald-Standard. Donations can be mailed to Give-A-Christmas, c/o Herald-Standard, 8-18 E. Church St., Uniontown, PA 15401 or brought to the Herald-Standard office in Uniontown from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. A post office box previously used for the campaign has been closed. Sparkle cans also have been placed in numerous store locations in the Herald-Standard distribution area.
“We still have just over 24 hours to raise as much money as possible,” said Sparkle. “The Salvation Army is counting on this, and I just know our readers will come through.”
