The Herald-Standard’s annual Give-A-Christmas fund is a bit closer to their goal, after receiving donations from several schools to help local Salvation Army locations.

Sparkle, the Christmas Star, who serves as the campaign’s mascot, encouraged readers to come through on the final day.

“You still have up to today at noon to help the cause! We could sure use your help,” said Sparkle. As of Monday, the fund had reached $29,778.06 after receiving almost $10,000 from schools in the Albert Gallatin and Uniontown Area school districts.

Many schools in the Albert Gallatin School District contributed to the $9,284.06, including A.L. Wilson Elementary with a donation of $500, D. Ferd Swaney Elementary with a donation of $400, Friendship Hill Elementary with a donation of $100, George J. Plava Elementary with a donation of $1,015, Albert Gallatin North Junior High with a donation of $1,583.05, Albert Gallatin South Junior High with a donation of $2,280.50, Masontown Elementary with a donation of $1,262 and the Albert Gallatin High School with a donation of $1,518.88. In the Uniontown Area School District, Franklin Elementary School donated $414.63.

“It’s wonderful to see so many students working hard to raise money for folks in need during the holiday season,” said Sparkle.

The Ethnic Craft Club of St. John The Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, pastored by Father Ronald Larko, also sent in a donation with a note saying, “God Bless you for all you do for the needy of the community. Christ is born! Glorify him!”

The Grace Chapel Presbyterian Church in Smithfield also held a penny jar donation throughout the season and donated the $35 raised.

Another donation was made by Tia Cat of Smithfield, accompanied by a special note saying, “Dear Sparkle, I hope you reach your goal. I’d like to donate in memory of my Uncle Billy Karwatske. I love him very much.”

A Uniontown man, George Shoaf, also made a donation in memory of his late wife, Rebecca Shoaf, who passed away May 2, 2009. Another donation was made by William Stone Cossick Sr., of Uniontown, in honor of his son, Will Stone Cossick Jr. Sparkle also received a donation from William Thomas of Hopwood.

“We’re a bit shy of our $50,000 goal, but I am hopeful that our community will continue to donate,” said Sparkle. “I know the Salvation Army will be appreciative of our efforts this holiday season!”
