District library systems seeks names for mascot

By Lynne E. Tharan for The 3 min read

The library’s Board of Directors president tells me this terribly cold weather is all my fault, because I mentioned in my column back in January that daffodils were poking up through the ground already. I guess I should bring up something about the promise of more snow and bitter cold then, to get rid of this miserable winter weather.

We really shouldn’t complain, though. Look at how much worse it has been for the eastern part of Pennsylvania. My daughters live out near Philadelphia, and two weeks ago they had no power either at home or at work for three days. Then there is my son who lives in Ft. Lauderdale and went to the beach twice last week. We don’t talk about that.

As many of you know, we are now part of a district library system that shares resources through our Polaris circulation system. The three counties share books, audio material — anything you need — and it’s called WAGGIN. Originally, the name was decided upon before Fayette County joined the system, so the name reflects two counties — Washington and Greene.

The mascot for WAGGIN is a darling Golden Retriever puppy who is on the new library cards and is an information retriever. He needs a name, though, so all the participating libraries are having a contest to name this delightful puppy. Everyone and anyone is invited to submit their choice for a name to any library in the WAGGIN network between now and March 16.

Entry forms are available at the 17 participating libraries, or you can download a digital copy at one of the following websites: washlibs.org, greenecolib.org and uniontownlib.org.

The top five name selections will be presented to the public for voting between March 26 and April 9. Visit your library in person or online to support your favorite. The winning entry will be announced on April 16 at a naming celebration held at Citizens Library & District Center as part of National Library Week. The winner will receive their very own WAGGIN mascot plush.

WAGGIN is made up of 17 libraries in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties. Through a web-based catalog and special resources, residents have access to over 800,000 items, shared databases and free online classes with their WAGGIN library card. WAGGIN libraries strengthen our community by inspiring lifelong learning and promoting literacy and knowledge. Your library can help you discover what you’re looking for — What do you seek?

So come see us in the library, submit a name for the puppy (we have him and entry forms upstairs in the Children’s Room) and watch for robins!

“Poor robin redbreast,

Look where he comes;

Let him in to feel your fire,

And toss him of your crumbs.” – Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
