Community events
n Laurel Hill State Park Hemlock Hike, 1-2 p.m. today, trail head of the Hemlock Trail. The group will hike through the stand of “old growth” hemlock trees and discover the lengthy adventure they have survived.
n Learn to Kayak, 10 a.m. to noon or 1-3 p.m. Monday, Laurel Hill Lake. Instruction will be followed by a leisurely paddle on Laurel Hill Lake. Meet at the beach below the Willis Pavilion. Registration is required: 814-352-8649.
n Flenniken Public Library’s “Geek the Library” will be held through May 31. People can purchase books with a donation at the library to help build their summer reading collection. The library also offers 3D printing services. Participants can download a file to the printer or create their own. A workshop to learn how to crochet ruffle scarves will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday. There is a cost to purchase yarn and a needle through the library. A representative from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency will be at the library 5 p.m. June 9. n German-Masontown Public Library summer reading program registration is currently underway. The program “Fizz, Boom, Read!” is open to elementary school students 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays July 17-Aug. 14. For middle and high school students, there will be a reading competition during the months of July and August.

n Connellsville Garden Club’s 10th annual Geranium Festival, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, downtown Connellsville. Features include entertainment, crafters, food booths, activities for children and geraniums. People will also be able to purchase flowers, and disc jockey Ben Millward will play music all day. Scheduled events include a princess contest at 10:30 a.m., a pet parade at 11:30 a.m., face painting and balloon artistry noon to 2 p.m., Wally Gingers Orchestra 1-2:30 p.m., special event at 2:30 p.m. and No Loose Endz 3-3:30 p.m.
n The 11 PA Infantry Reserve, Company F re-enactors encampment, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and June 1, Fayette County Historical Society Abel Colley Tavern Museum. The Made in Fayette, Glasshouses from Gallatin to Houze, 200 Years of History exhibit will also be open.
n Strawberry Festival, 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Albirght United Methodist Church. Tickets include cake with strawberries, ice cream, whipped cream and beverage. There will be hot dogs with or without sauerkraut and barbecued ham sandwiches for sale. Takeout will be available. Tickets sold at the door.
n Pennsylvania Literary Festival children’s activities, Friday, Saturday and June 1, Uniontown Mall. Dino Detectives, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, cake bake, 12:30 p.m. Saturday, costume contest 6 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Once Upon a Toon, 1 p.m. June 1 and children’s story time throughout the festival. n Fifth annual Five Alarm Mountain Madness Chili Cook-Off, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 14, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Participants can compete in three categories: Red Chili, Chili Verde and Salsa. Winners qualify directly for the International Chili Society’s World’s Championship scheduled for October. There will also be craft beer tastings, a “Kidz Korner,” adventure sports, live entertainment and more. A portion of the event proceeds to benefit the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department. Memorial Day services
n Rices Landing Memorial Day services, 2 p.m. today. A parade will begin at the Brooks-Crago American Legion Post No. 816 and will proceed to the Honor Roll located between the Hewitt Cemetery and the Hewitt Presbyterian Church. The service will include the Jefferson-Morgan High School Band, Boy and Girl Scouts of Rices Landing and the Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Department. Kit Watson, Pennsylvania Adjutant for the American Legion will serve as the speaker. A reading of General Logan’s Orders and “In Flanders’ Field” will take place. A service at the Crucible Cemetery Honor Roll will follow. Everyone is welcome back to the post home for refreshments.
n Mount Morris Memorial Day services, 11 a.m. today. The James R. Maxon American Legion Post No. 992 Honor Guard/Firing Squad will take place at 11 a.m. at Kiger Cemetery. Immediately following, a service at Claughton Chapel Cemetery will be held.
n Carmichaels Honor Guard Memorial Day services, noon today. Dr. Lawrence M. Stratton, director of the Stover Center for Constitutional Studies and Moral Leadership at Waynesburg University will speak at Garard Fort Cemetery at noon. A salute to the deceased and placement of the wreath to honor the deceased will be held at 1 p.m. at the Greensboro VFW Honor Roll.
n Charleroi Veterans Council Memorial Day ceremonies, Monday, at various honor rolls in the community. Honor roll services include 9 a.m. Speers, 9:30 a.m. Fallowfield, 10 a.m. North Charleroi (Lock 4), 11 a.m. Charleroi and noon Dunlevy. The Charleroi High School Band and school choir, with special music by Charleroi senior Joey Papadakos will perform at Charleroi.
n Masontown Volunteer Fire Department annual fire department memorial program, 9 a.m. Monday, at the fire department, 221 N. Washington St., Masontown. All deceased brother firemen of the Masontown Volunteer Fire Department will be honored. Everyone is welcome.
n Perryopolis Memorial Day program, 10 a.m. Monday, Frazier High School auditorium. The ceremony will include the Pledge of Allegiance, welcoming address, presentation of the Patriotic Flag Raising Award, introduction of the winners of the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy contests, guest speaker state Rep. Deberah Kula, D-North Union Township, the memorializing of comrades who passed away in 2013 and 2014 and ceremonial firing squad.
n Carmichaels Honor Guard Memorial Day services, Monday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. at the Nemacolin Honor Roll and 11 a.m. at the Crucible Honor Roll, with speakers state Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson and Robert W. Teagarden III, Army veteran combat specialist. A parade from the American Legion Post No. 400 to the Laurel Point Cemetery will take place at 12:30 p.m. Martin J. Yoskovich will speak at 1 p.m. at the Laurel Point Cemetery. At 1:30 p.m. lunch will be provided at the Carmichaels VFW Post No. 3491 at 1:30 p.m. by the ladies auxiliary.
n United War Veterans Association’s Memorial Day program, 10 a.m. Monday, Sylvan Heights Cemetery, North Gallatin Avenue Extension, Uniontown. All veterans and the public are welcome to attend.
n Memorial Day Prayer Service, 10 a.m. Monday, Mount St. Macrina Cemetery, Uniontown. Members of the AMVETS Post 103 will participate.
n Waynesburg Memorial Day services, 11 a.m. Monday, Waynesburg VFW Post No. 4793, Lincoln Street, Waynesburg. Blair Zimmerman, Greene County commissioner, will be the speaker. At 2:30 p.m. the VFW Post No. 4793, the James E. Farrell American Legion Post No. 330 and the DAV Chapter 123 of Waynesburg will participate in a dedication of a veterans monument at the Aleppo Brethren Church.
n Jefferson Memorial Day services, 11 a.m. Monday, Mather Honor Roll/ Post Office. The speaker will be pastor Brad Edgar of the Clarksville Christian Church. There will also be a salute to the deceased and placement of the wreath at the honor roll. At 11:30 a.m. at Jefferson Cemetery a salute to the deceased and a wreath placement at the honor roll will take place. At noon, a service at the veterans’ section of the Greene County Memorial Park will be held with a salute to the deceased and wreath placement at the base of the American flag. The Filer-Sadlek Post No. 954 is organizing the service.
n Mount Morris Memorial Day services, 10 a.m. Monday, Mount Morris United Methodist Church. At 11 a.m., a parade from the church to the creek will be held. There will be a salute to the deceased Navy by throwing a flower into the creek. At noon, ceremonies at the Cedar Grove Cemetery will take place. A placement of a wreath in honor of the deceased will take place at the monument. The services are hosted by the James R. Mason American Legion Post No. 992.

n Gospel Glory Gathering/Ten Commandments rally, 6:30 p.m. June 6, Fraternal Order of Eagles, 116 S. Arch St., Connellsville. Gospel groups attending include Free Spirit, Chozen 1’nz, Cheryl Williams, Mitch Wall, George Barietic, Betty Riecks, Cordells and Sharon Honsaker. n The Crime Victims’ Center of Fayette County offers age-appropriate programs on various topics that are available from ages 3 through adult.
