Brownsville receives playground grant
BROWNSVILLE — Borough council obtained a $34,700 grant from the state for making improvements to the North Side playground on Fifth Avenue.
The street department will provide in-kind services for the required match to the grant, which is from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Councilman Jack Lawver said Tuesday.
Work at the park includes parking and access improvements, and the borough can apply for a playground equipment grant after the work is done, he said.
The work will start in the spring.
In other business, council:
n Awarded a $15,900 contract to Lee’s Plumbing and Excavating of New Salem to repave part of Clover Street.
n Accepted the resignation of police officer Tom Obarto.
n Agreed to apply for a grant to upgrade all the street lights in the borough.
n Approved working with Brownsville Township to update the comprehensive plan.
n Approved buying a new radio to operate the fire whistle for $966.
n Announced that the annual light-up night will be held Nov. 28 beginning at 5 p.m. with a parade from the Hiller Volunteer Fire Department to Nemacolin Castle, where children can visit Santa Claus.
