New Salem to hold light-up night festivitites

This year the New Salem Neighborhood Watch will continue their annual light-up night festivities on Nov. 29.

The evening will kick-off with the lighting of the community Christmas tree located on the corner of Main Street and North Mill Street at 6 p.m. The youth group from St. Francis of Assisi will sing Christmas carols during the lighting ceremony which will also feature the lighting of 40 Christmas decorations that will adorn telephone poles throughout the community.

Immediately following, community members are invited to the New Salem Fire Department for an evening of entertainment and fellowship.

“We will have a magician (Sam the Magic Man), and Santa Claus will be there, and we will have fellowship time afterwards, and we will have our carriage rides, and we will have a Chinese auction full of baskets,” said Tim Berdar, president of New Salem’s neighborhood watch.

While all of the evening’s events are free, Berdar is encouraging people to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the local food bank.

“If everybody can bring one can of food for the food bank, we would greatly appreciate it,” he said. “I think the food bank is up to serving 80 to 100 families. When they got started they were serving 25 families.”

Even though the highlight for some might be the twinkling decorations or a visit from Old Saint Nick, for Berdar, the evening is all about coming together as a community.

“We do it for our fellowship time mostly. I hope people really see that the true meaning (of Christmas) isn’t about presents and gifts; it is about fellowship time,” he said. “Snow or shine we will be here. We want to fill it up and have more people than we have had.”
