Redstone Township receives grant to install intersection warning signals

With the help of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Redstone Township supervisors have taken measures to improve the safety of drivers in Fayette County.

The township is among 37 municipalities that will receive a grant as part of the Automated Red Light Enforcement project to help curb traffic issues at Route 40 and Stone Church Road, near Jackson Farm and the Sunoco gas station.

“It’s a heavily trafficked area. There have been numerous accidents in that area — just within the last week and a half, there have been at least two,” said supervisor George Matis.

Approximately $90,000 will go towards installing flashing yellow caution lights before the stop light.

“We hope this will let drivers know that it’s a busy intersection,” said Matis. The supervisors applied for the grant last year as well, but did not receive it.

Jefferson Township in Greene County also received a grant for roughly $6,638 to upgrade the school warning devices along Route 188.

According to PennDOT, the state’s “ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.”

Nearly $6.6 million will go toward 41 safety projects across the state.

PennDOT spokeswoman Valerie Petersen said in a release that more than 226 applications were received, totalling almost $36.6 million. The applications were narrowed down and selected by a small committee based on benefits and effectiveness, cost, local and regional impact and cost sharing, Petersen said.

Since 2010, more than $39.8 million has been awarded to 275 safety projects in the state.
