Event offers inner and outer beautification for community

A four week program starting this afternoon is designed to help folks in Uniontown to get into shape while helping the community to do the same.

The Spring Pick (me) Up event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. on the stage at Storey Square with stretching and deep breathing exercises led by LOVE Yoga instructor Kristen Tweardy. Unlike most yoga classes, participants are encouraged to bring brooms, trowels, work gloves and shovels. The program was the brainchild of Uniontown’s Main Street/Elm Street manager, Rebecca Hilton after participating in a class at LOVE Yoga in downtown Uniontown.

“I was trying to get into shape and I noticed that things needed to be cleaned up around town,” Hilton said.

Instructor Kristen Tweardy was quick to volunteer her services when approached by Hilton.

“I love the idea of community that yoga can bring, along with the idea of community service. It makes sense,” Tweardy said. “Everyone can benefit from stretching and breathing exercises.”

Participants will meet at 4:30 and participate in 15-20 minutes of stretching and breathing exercises, giving folks time to get to Storey Square after work and still get some exercise in before hitting the streets for cleaning efforts.

“It’s just a little taste of yoga. I want to do the walking and cleaning up wherever people want to go,” Hilton said.

Hilton said the 911 parking lot is first on the agenda for cleaning, followed by other public areas of town, though she will take suggestions from the participants as well.

“We’re going to try to sweep away some of the dirt and debris. We’re going to start with a little area and go from there,” Hilton said.

Work may include sweeping or weeding or litter pick up, with the entire activity expected to last about an hour.Hilton said there’s no need to register for the event which will be held each Monday for the next four weeks.
