Connellsville Redevelopment Authority seeking input for 2015 CDBG

CONNELLSVILLE — The Connellsville Redevelopment Authority has scheduled a hearing to gather suggestions for spending the 2015 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of $274,500, which is $13,811 less than the 2014 grant.

The authority announced on Monday that the hearing will be held in City Hall on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.

CDBG money can be spent on a variety of projects that benefit low and moderate income residents, Michael Edwards, authority executive director, said, noting that 51 percent of the city’s population meet the income qualifications.

From the total grant, $225,000 will be available for projects, Edward said.

A second public hearing will be held on Oct. 7, and City Council will be asked to approve submitting the grant application, which is due in to the state by Oct. 30, at its Oct. 21 meeting, he said.

The authority has submitted a request to the state for the release of the 2014 CDBG, Edwards said.

In unrelated business, Edwards said he is preparing proposals to start loan funds for home rehabilitation projects and businesses using local share assessment account money from gambling operations.

The Fayette County Redevelopment Authority and the state must approve the proposals, he said.

In other business, the authority:

n Approved submitting a grant application to the Allegheny Foundation for $250,000 to replace the leaky, 30-year-old roof of the Connellsville Community Center, replacing the roof and repointing the third-floor brick wall on the authority’s office building and for authority operating expenses.

n Announced that Schobert Construction of Connellsville was notified that it submitted the low bid, $46,500, to replace the band shell roof at East Park, and the work should start soon.

n Approved removing a residential property at 108-110 Gallatin Ave. from the demolition list, citing an agreement between the city and property owners in which the owners have a year to make repairs.
