Laurel Highlands doesn’t need to hire another elementary school teacher

The Laurel Highlands School District doesn’t have to hire another elementary school teacher this year.

At a school board meeting on Aug. 20, the week before the first day of classes, board members said projected class sizes indicated that another teacher might be needed at Marshall Elementary School.

Not including kindergarten, 139 new students enrolled in the district for the coming year, one board member said.

Based on class sizes reported on Thursday, the fourth day of classes, another teacher is not needed, Superintendent Jesse Wallace said.

“I think we will be OK. I don’t think we’ll need to make any personnel changes as far as hiring another teacher,” Wallace said.

He said he would give his findings to the board so they can decide if they want to hold a special meeting to discuss the matter.

A special meeting would have been needed to hire a teacher if one were needed, he said. Wallace said class size numbers were a little less than what was anticipated.
