Holiday tour features Fairchance churches
Sharing the spirit of the season, the Community Alliance of Christian Women is hosting its seventh tour of Fairchance churches decorated for Advent and Christmas, beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 6.
“We want to showcase the churches, but also to remind people of the presence of Jesus Christ in the community and in our lives,” said Nan Chess of the alliance.
Open to the public at no charge, the tour features seven churches, starting this year at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church, located at 50 N. Morgantown St. The tour then proceeds to First Baptist Church of Fairchance, located at 17 N. Morgantown St.; First Presbyterian Church, 114 W. Church St.; Fairchance Free Methodist Church, 53 S. Morgantown St.; Trinity United Methodist Church, 27 N. Main St.; Church of the Brethren, 17 Gallatin Ave. The tour finishes at Mount Calvary Baptist, 135 N. Morgantown St., where light refreshments will be served.
Chess explained the churches are rotated annually so each takes a turn at serving refreshments.
Each church will offer a greeting to members of the tour and showcase a talent, have a reading or sing carols during the visit.
The tour lasts between 90 minutes and two hours, including the time that participants take to travel to each of the churches. Some people drive if they have trouble walking or the weather is inclement, but many walk to each church in a group, singing carols along the way.
Chess said the community event usually attracts between 70 and 80 people with 83 participating in the tour in 2014.
She remarked, “The tour puts everybody in the mood. It shows why Jesus is the reason for the season, to quote an old phrase.”
