Carmichaels school officials announce open house for renovated building
CARMICHAELS — Construction first began in the Carmichaels Area School District in April 2014. Now, 20 months later, an open house will be held for the public to tour the newly-renovated junior-senior high school.
The open house will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Dec. 16.
Some of the new renovations include a new cafeteria, an updated gymnasium and updated classrooms and hallways. New equipment was also a part of the project and includes new technologies in classrooms, new lockers and new seating and technology in the auditorium.
In other matters, in an 8-1 vote, Joshua Novodny was hired to a custodial maintenance position, effective Dec. 14. Director Lewis May voted against the motion.
The board accepted the resignation of Fred Morecraft as the assistant softball coach.
Also at the meeting, with the district police officer being off on sick leave, the board authorized Superintendent John Menhart to seek and hire security services to be used on an ad hoc basis. Business Manager Amy Todd said the security would definitely be used at home sporting events.
Meanwhile, the board voted on an agreement between Westmoreland County Community College and the high school. Todd said that if students wish, they may take college level writing and algebra courses in the high school. The courses may then be transferred as college credits.
The next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 21 in the high school media center.
