The 2015 Christmas Tour of Uniontown Churches is emphasizing “Christmastide Traditions” as its theme, allowing participating churches to showcase their holiday traditions. The tour takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“We will highlight something we do to celebrate Christmas,” explained the Rev. Heather Simpson, pastor of Central Christian Church, located at 23 S. Gallatin Ave., where people will gather for the tour.

The tour group will travel together, visiting in order: St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 71 N. Gallatin Ave.; St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 60 Morgantown St.; Asbury United Methodist, 20 Dunbar St.; Uniontown Church of the Brethren, 20 Robinson St.; Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 79 W. Fayette St.; and then back to Central Christian.

Each stop will allow the public an opportunity to see each church decorated for Christmas. Each church will also host a presentation on one of its Christmas traditions.

For example, Trinity will offer a sample of its Lessons and Carols that includes music and readings about the Christmas story while Asbury will share “A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition” and The Church of the Brethren will explain the organization of the Brethren Church in America, which took place on Christmas evening in 1723. Central will talk about its tradition of presenting a live Nativity, which it has done for 41 years. Central is also observing its 125th anniversary this year.

The tour ends at Central Christian where participants will enjoy fellowship and refreshments in the parlor with cookies brought in by the participating tour churches.

This is the third year for the tour. Last year, about 50 people took part. Participants may walk or take their own vehicles to each stop.

Simpson said of the tour, “My favorite thing is to connect with the churches near us and to support other clergy. It’s beautiful seeing the inside of other churches, how they’re decorated for Christmas and learning about their traditions. There is a lot that we have in common.”

She added, “We can appreciate what each denomination adds to Uniontown and to the world.”

There is no charge for the tour.

“This is a ministry,” said Simpson. “We want to be able to open our doors and give people an understanding of who we are and how we are connected in God’s mission and to be able to celebrate our Savior’s birth.”
