Brownsville receives grant
Half a $50,000 grant that Brownsville borough received from a foundation will be used for the match of a state grant the borough hopes to get to clean up Dunlap Creek.
Borough councilman Jack Lawver discussed the grants at Tuesday’s council meeting.
The borough was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Benedum Foundation, Lawver said.
Half the grant would be used as the required match for a $50,000 Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant the borough plans to apply for to clean up the creek and stabilize its banks, he said.
The other half of the Benedum grant would go to Cathy McCollom, of McCllom Development Strategies, who applied for the grant on the borough’s behalf and would serve as project coordinator, said Council President James Lawver.
In unrelated business, Jack Lawver said he will send a letter to the Fayette County emergency management agency expressing concerns about the emergency alert system for volunteer fire fighters.
He said there were four recent alarms in the borough, but none were received on the pagers that he and other fire fighters use.
The county’s recent upgrade to a digital radio system has greatly improved radio reception, but the alert system also needs an upgrade, he said.
In other business, Gary Hoffman of Hoffman Kennels of Delmont gave council a brief overview of the animal control services he provides and copies of a service contract.
James Lawver said council would review the contract and consider it at the February meeting.
