Menallen Township superviors detail new garbage services

MENALLEN TWP. — Starting Monday, a new garbage collection company began providing service to township residents.

Fayette Waste of Waltersburg was hired to collect garbage at a special meeting last month, replacing Advanced Disposal. At their meeting last week, supervisors said the change in trash haulers resulted in a change in pick-up days.

Those who live on the north side of Route 40 will have garbage collected on Thursdays, while those who live on the south side of Route 40 will have trash picked up on Fridays.

In Buffington, residents living on New Salem Road should put their garbage in the alley for pick up, and those living on First through Fourth Streets must now leave their garbage in the front rather than in the alley, officials said.

In addition, residents should not pay any future invoices from Advanced Disposal, except to settle any amount that is outstanding. Anyone who has paid that company for trash pick up in advance should contact them to request a refund, supervisors said.

In another matter, JD Ewing of JD & D Enterprises notified supervisors that a state Department of Transportation officer stopped a delivery truck entering Franklin Commercial Park via Industry Lane last week. Although that road is posted with a 10-ton weight limit, it is the alternative route for delivery vehicles agreed upon over six months ago between the commercial park owners and the township.

The original goal of the agreement was to eliminate large vehicles from using Old Route 51. After he was warned by the officer, the delivery driver took a different route the next time, which added 30 minutes to his delivery time.

“We have a solution for you,” said supervisor Joe Petrucci.

The supervisors proceeded to approve a motion to delete the weight restriction from Industry Lane. In the meantime, they will remove the weight limit sign from the road and inform the state police of the planned change. The change will be advertised prior to the next township meeting.

In another matter, supervisors informed residents that the contract with Atlantic Broadband has been agreed upon, and the plans for cable and internet service for many areas of the township are in motion.
