Local resident celebrates 100th birthday surrounded by loved ones

For Mary Michaux of Crescent Height, life is about family, friends and kindness.
Michaux recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by friends and the six generations of her family at the Brownsville Sons of Italy.
She was born April 3, 1915, to parents Robert and Hattie Johnson of Pittsburgh.
After meeting Leonard Michaux and getting married, the couple moved to Daisytown where they raised their children: Ronald Michaux of Connellsville, Lena Mae Patter of Pittsburgh, Robert Michaux of Uniontown, Marie Harris of Uniontown, Betty Ann Harris and Gary Michaux of Daisytown, Sharon Ellis and Gregory Michaux of Uniontown, and Michael Michaux of Grindstone.
For many years, Leonard Michaux, who has passed away, worked for the Crescent Coal Mines while Mary Michaux worked hard to make the family’s house a home.
She was also involved in the ladies’ auxiliary of Mount Zion Baptist Church and enjoyed baking and going to bingo regularly.
“My mother was known for baking bread and cinnamon rolls and cakes,” said Ellis.
In addition to the popularity of her delicious baked goods, Mary Michaux is also known for her kindness and generosity.
“Her door was always open for people who had hard times and needed somewhere to stay,” said Ellis. “My mom took in many families whose houses had burned down.”
