Local cleanup days slated
Many local communities in the region come together to push out winter and usher in spring with various spring cleanup events.
According to The Great American Cleanup Pennsylvania website, several counties within the state have events marked to remove debris that has accumulated over the winter.
Matthew Crutchman, executive director of the East End United Community Center, said that the Uniontown Concerned Citizens Association has been working closely with the city of Uniontown to plan three days for people to volunteer to clean up surrounding neighborhoods.
“The mayor is really supportive this year. He really wants to help clean up the community,” said Crutchman.
On April 16 a cleanup is planned for the area around LaFayette School. The school, located on Connellsville Street, will serve as the location of the dumpster where all trash can be deposited.
This cleanup is being organized by the Uniontown Concerned Citizens Association and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
The last cleanup event planned for this spring will be held April 30 in the East End neighborhood of Uniontown. The meeting place for the cleanup will be in a parking lot located on Austin Street across from Esther’s bar.
Crutchman said that Terry Sanders from Genesis House will organize volunteers to go through the community to pick up some trash along the streets.
He also added that plans are underway to have additional cleanup events this summer, but no specific dates have been decided.
The city of Charleroi will hold its fifth annual cleanup day 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 29.
“We like to clean it up and make it look pleasing to the people coming into our town,” said Roberta Doerfler, Charleroi borough secretary.
Doerfler said the areas that the cleanup will target will be the entrances to the town.
“A lot of students from our school will plant plants in our planters,” she added.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Market House at 8 a.m. Supplies for the cleanup will be distributed.
