Open house scheduled for new Brownsville elementary school
Elementary students in Brownsville Area School District will have a new home for the upcoming school year, and community members will get a sneak peak of the $17 million facility.
In a brief ceremony, the district will hold a ribbon cutting at Brownsville Area Elementary School at 6 p.m. Wednesday followed by an open house of the new complex until 8 p.m, during which attendees will be able to walk through the building to view classrooms and other spaces.
The new school will serve all elementary students in the district as its two current elementary schools, Central Elementary in Luzerne Township and Cox-Donahey in Redstone Township, are shuttered.
The project dates back several years with the board giving the go ahead in 2013 and construction beginning in April 2015.
Superintendent Dr. Phil Savini said the project has remained on schedule for its duration with few problems.
“This is probably one of the smoothest projects I’ve ever been involved with, in working with the board and the architects,” said Savini.
“Everybody communicated, everybody worked well together and made decisions that benefit the students and benefit the taxpayer. The key was keeping all the parties together and invested and informed.”
Savini commended the district’s maintenance staff for their work to prep the building, coordinate with contractors and ease the transition to the new facility.
