Charleroi Area ‘aces’ state testing audit
High school students took the algebra section of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment test Tuesday, but it was the Charleroi Area School District which “aced” the state’s test.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education conducted a surprise audit of the district’s testing Tuesday.
“We aced the audit,” District Superintendent Dr. Ed Zelich told the school board during a meeting Tuesday night.
State officials examined the district’s testing methods and procedures, reviewed how tests are disseminated and interviewed teachers on how they were trained, said Zelich.
Zelich said districts send their testing dates to Harrisburg in advance and the state shows up unannounced.
“We’re very happy for our staff and our teachers,” Zelich said. “It was a total team effort.”
In an unrelated matter, the board also approved an AIU natural gas consortium renewal agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, the board will provide an easement on three-fourths of an acre at the front of the district campus for a fee of $2,000.
Zelich said the agreement does not authorize digging on the property, but a natural gas line will run beneath the surface.
In a personnel move, the board also hired substitute teachers Kate Hayden and Christine Bridge.
