Mount Pleasant Township holds line on taxes

By Linda Harkcom for The 2 min read

MOUNT PLEASANT TWP. — Supervisors have once again passed a budget without a tax increase.

The millage rate for the township will remain at 2.42 mills. Board of Supervisors Chairman Duane Hutter said it has been over 80 years since the municipality has raised taxes.

“We all three work within our means, and we work with the money that we get,” Hutter said.

Secretary Caprice Mills said the $2,738,910 budget had some projected expense increases for engineering and building maintenance that were offset by a rise in tax revenue.

Hutter reminded residents that starting Jan. 1 Advanced Disposal will begin servicing the municipality as its new waste provider. He said the first quarter bill along with collection schedule went out in the mail to residents last week and the new recycling containers should be delivered this week.

“There is an increase of a couple cents but we now have biweekly recycling and e-cycling and it would have gone up higher if we had stayed with Waste Management,” said Supervisor Jack Rutkowski.

Mills said residents can use any garbage bags they choose with the exception of some senior citizens who take advantage of some of the flexible senior citizen programs.

The board approved a street light agreement between the municipality and West Penn Power Company to replace lights in some areas of the township. Hutter said about 33 lights are located in Hecla, Standard Shaft and the Mellingertown Road areas of the township.

Resident Bill Huber addressed the board again regarding concerns over water runoff from West Laurel onto Huber Road. Huber thanked the supervisors for the work done to the road so far and asked for more help to stop the runoff. Rutkowski said he is working on a plan that will divert the runoff that will also not restrict the low-to-the-ground cars of the residents living there.
