Tutoring program returns in Monessen
After a hiatus of a few years, an after-school tutoring program is returning to Monessen middle and high schools.
During a meeting Tuesday night, the Monessen School Board approved the tutoring program. The school board meeting was rescheduled from last Tuesday due to a significant snow storm a week ago.
Participating students will be fed at 2:30 p.m., when classes let out. Tutoring will be held from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m., high school Principal Eric Manko said.
The program will be made available for students in grades six through 12.
Manko said students will be offered the chance to utilize the library and technology resources.
Teachers will be offered the chance to participate, said Manko.
“I think this is especially a plus for students who are struggling,” said director Lee Johnson.
“We need the cooperation of coaches for students who need the help,” added board member Roberta Bergstedt.
Manko said he will contact Hilltop Bus Lines about the possibility of providing transportation for students who stay after school for the tutoring program.
“Hopefully, it’s a success,” Manko said. “In my mind, even if five or six students are helped, that’s great. If 20 or 30 participate, fantastic.”
Meanwhile, the school board approved the addition of an emotional support classroom at the elementary level.
Elementary Principal Beth Anne Natali said the need for the emotional support classroom was determined on Individualized Education Programs for students.
A teacher from within the district will be chosen for the class. It will be limited to students from within the Monessen School District, for now, Natale said.
Although the emotional support class will be at the elementary level for now, it could be moving into the middle or high school, if there is a need, Superintendent Dr. Leanne Spazak said.
