Some local groups have canceled their trips to the 43rd annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., due to the forecast for a blizzard that is to strike the area beginning later today. The march protests the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

But district residents interested in the pro-life movement will have an opportunity to stand up for their beliefs in an event planned in Uniontown this morning.

Jerry Zufelt, managing director of the Office for Communications for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg, reported, “Geibel Catholic (in Connellsvile) has canceled its trip to Washington for the March for Life as has Greensburg Central Catholic. Geibel Catholic is planning a prayer service at the school, but details have not been finalized.”

At last report, Bishop Edward Malesic of the Greensburg diocese was still planning to participate in the March for Life.

A representative for the Christian Family and Children’s Center in Indian Head reported the center canceled its trip,”

“We just made the decision to cancel our trip to the March because of the weather,” reported Dr. D. Merle Skinner, executive director.

Meanwhile, in recognition of the March For Life in Washington, the Knights of Columbus Council 1275 will have a Mass offered for the protection of the unborn child at 8 a.m. Friday at St. Mary (Nativity) Roman Catholic Church, located at 61 N. Mount Vernon Ave., Uniontown. The rosary will be recited after Mass.

Members will then stand for about an hour at Five Corners with pro-life signs, starting around 9:15 a.m.
