Mount Pleasant supervisors ahead of the game with salt

By Linda Harkcom for The 2 min read

MOUNT PLEASANT TWP. — A mild winter has created a surplus of salt for the township.

At their monthly meeting, Vice Chairman Duane Hutter said bills totaling $117,686.40 included money for salt.

“We have to buy 60 percent of our contract or pay for storage. So our salt sheds are plumb full for next year,” Hutter said.

Supervisors made efforts toward planning for summer road work by approving the purchase of 2013 Lee-boy paver. The paver is being purchased from Walsh Equipment of Butler for $49,750 after deducting the $10,000 credit the municipality will receive for the trade-in of its old paver. The municipality is scheduled to take possession of the paver this week.

The board also awarded material bids for 2016-17 to Hanson Aggregates BMC, New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company Inc., Amerikohl Aggregates Inc., Bullskin Stone and Lime, HEL-WAY LLC, Russell Standard Cold Patch and Midland Asphalt.

“As soon as the weather breaks we will start to prep roads in all three districts so they are ready for us to start our chipping program in July,” Chairman Jack Rutkowski said.

Rutkowski said at the top of their list is the bridge known as Harhai Road Bridge, which connects Hempfield and Mount Pleasant townships. The small bridge has been closed since the summer. At their January meeting, the municipality agreed to an Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement with Hempfield Township for the purpose of sharing maintenance responsibilities for the bridge. Hempfield Township would pay for materials and Mount Pleasant Township would supply the labor.

“It’s in the engineer’s hands right now, and we are waiting for the OK to do the work,” Rutkowski said.

In a continued effort to improve the look of the municipality, Rutkowski asked residents to please clean up their yards.

“We are getting some complaints,” he said.
