Builders trade event set in Donora

By Christopher Buckley cbuckley@heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

A presentation on careers in the union building trades will be held 6 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Donora Borough Social Hall.

Jason Fincke, executive director of Builders Guild of Western Pennsylvania, will discuss job and training opportunities in the construction trades and how to apply to tuition-free joint apprenticeship training program.

Applications will be accepted for apprenticeships.

Open to the public, it is free and no advance registration is needed.

The event is being sponsored by the Mon Valley NAACP, the Builders Guild of Western Pennsylvania and the Borough of Donora.

Ken Yonek, chairman of the environmental justice committee of the Mon Valley NAACP, said his committee works on transition and sustainability for its members in the valley.

“Transition involves how to find jobs,” Yonek said. “We identify training and job opportunities.”

Yonek said the Donora event was created after he spoke with Fincke about job opportunities in the region.

“We are still looking for things that bring growth and development into the valley,” Yonek said. “We will see how much interest there is.”

Yonek brought the idea to Donora Mayor Don Pavelko, who embraced it.

“This will be a good event for those looking for new employment opportunities,” said Pavelko. “I thought it would be a great idea for young people.”

Apprenticeship programs to be discussed include boilermakers; bricklayers, including stone masons, pointer caulker cleaners, tile workers and terrazzo workers; carpenters, including heavy highway carpenters, floor coverers, mill cabinet workers, millwrights and pile drivers; cement masons and plasterers; electricians; elevator constructors; insulators; iron workers; painters dry wall finishers and glaziers; laborers; operating engineers; plumbers; roofers; sheet metal workers; sprinkler fitters and steamfitters.
