Monessen to host parade, light Christmas tree

A Christmas parade in downtown Monessen on Sunday will precede the lighting of a Christmas tree in the city.

The parade will start at Valley 1st Community Federal Credit Union, 815 Schoonmaker Ave. and proceed to the corner of Third Street and Schoonmaker Avenue before ending next to Lucchesi’s Bar & Restaurant, 372 Donner Ave.

All activities are jointly being sponsored by the Mon Valley Citadel of the Salvation Army and the Monessen Chamber of Commerce.

The public is encouraged to bring mittens for donating to the Salvation Army’s collection for coat and mitten distribution.

The parade line-up will begin at 5 p.m. The parade will commence at 5:30 p.m.

Santa will arrive on a fire truck. Additionally, fire departments, veterans organizations, youth sports teams and cheerleading squads were invited.

“We’re open to any groups who want to participate,” said Capt. Sue Thwaite of the Salvation Army.

Treat bags will be given to the first 150 youths. Local businesses have donated to the treat bags, Thwaite said.

The Christmas tree will be lit by Monessen Mayor Lou Mavrakis immediately after the parade is completed.

Fireworks by B&D Fireworks will be set off after the tree is lit.

Hot chocolate and cookies will be given out.

A men’s choir will sing carols around the tree.

“The goal is to bring unity and to bring the people of the community together to celebrate the Christmas season,” Thwaire said.
