Rostraver Township to plan for more electronics recyclable pickups
ROSTRAVER TWP. — A pilot electronics recyclable pickup was so successful for Rostraver Township that it plans on continuing a similar collection in the future.
Commissioner Devin DeRienzo told the board of commissioners that approximately 400 televisions and many small electronic devices were collected during August. These items were then transported to a recycling center in Latrobe.
Five pickup days were scheduled throughout the month to coincide with regular garbage pickup days. DeRienzo noted that the township arranged these pickups for the convenience of the residents.
“A lot of municipalities schedule recyclable collections throughout the year but their residents have to transport the items to a pickup site,” he said. “That creates some difficulties for older residents. We decided to pick up the recyclables right at each person’s home, at no extra cost to each resident. Many residents have called us, expressing their thanks for this initiative.”
DiRienzo added that Rostraver Township is looking into holding a similar recycling drive next summer then every two years after that.
In other action, the board voted to:
n Accept the bid and awarded the contract for the Orr Road Culvert Replacement Project Contract to Morgan Excavating, the lowest responsible bidder, at a total cost of $45,233. This project will replace culverts and make ditch and stream bank improvements. It is funded primarily with a grant received from the Dirt, Gravel and Low Volume Road Program through the Westmoreland County Conservation District.
n Reduce Entech LLC’s Development bond from $1.046 million to $919,797 and reduce Entech LLC’s storm water bond from $558,440 to $497,773 (both involve work at Marian Woodlands).
n Order 100 pounds of rat bait through the Penn State Rat Bait Program at a cost of $2.05 per pound.
Also during the meeting, John B. Masich, president of the board of directors for the Rostraver Public Library, told the commissioners that a job search is underway to find a new library director. He added that the library has scheduled a fundraiser at the Rostraver Fire Hall on Oct. 8.
