Greene County commissioners vote to demolish four old county bridges

WAYNESBURG — Greene County commissioners voted last week to move forward in the demolishing of four old and abandoned county bridges.

The board will advertise for bids with the hope the material, including cut stone and steel beams, are salvageable, thus negating the county’s cost responsibility for the demolition.

Chief Clerk Jeff Marshall said following last week’s business meeting the four bridges have been closed for at least 10 years and all span specific waterways.

“Most people know they have been closed so there have been no traffic issues in the municipalities,” he said. “What we are trying to do is eliminate any liability problems, although none has occurred so far.”

Marshall said the company eventually hired to do the work will find the materials are indeed salvageable.

The four bridges are:

n County Bridge No. 1 on Township Route 479 in Franklin Township in East View, an 83-foot bridge over Ten Mile Creek built in 1915.

n County Bridge No. 26 on Township Route 568 in Franklin and Jefferson townships, a 123-foot bridge over Ten Mile Creek built in 1910.

n County Bridge No. 87 on Township Route 659 in Morgan Township, a 159-foot bridge over Ten Mile Creek built in 1902.

n County Bridge No. 92 on Township Route 684 in Cumberland Township, an 87-foot bridge over Muddy Creek built in 1892.

In personnel matters, the commissioners appointed Barbara Walters to the Human Services Advisory Board of Directors and Thelma Szarell to the CYS Advisory Board of Directors, and accepted the resignation of Kayla Patton from the Tourist Promotion Board of Directors.
