Pet Adoption Day planned at North Belle Vernon park
North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park is going to the dogs … and the cats.
On May 13, the park will host Pet Adoption Day. It will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event was created by R.J. Sokol, chairman of parks and recreation for North Belle Vernon Council.
The Washington County Humane Society and the Humane Society Yukon will bring animals available for adoption. The dogs and cats will be set up in a fenced off area, where visitors can walk around and interact with the pets.
Visitors can adopt the animals on the spot, Sokol said.
“I want to give every one of these pets a chance to be adopted,” Sokol said. “That’s why I organized this and the recreation committee agreed to sponsor this. Our goal is to get these pets adopted and the way to get these pets adopted is to get as many people in attendance as possible.”
Students at St. Sebastian School in North Belle Vernon will make treats for the animals.
Donations collected that day will be split between the two humane societies.
Sokol said he organized Pet Adoption Day because he has been a pet owner throughout his life.
Each Christmas, he donates food for animals at the Humane Society.
Sokol said if Pet Adoption Day is successful, he may bring it back in the fall.
“The park is not just for North Belle Vernon, it is a valley wide park,” Sokol said.
There will also be arts and crafts vendors
“We are doing everything to make this a success,” Sokol said.
