BVA school board agrees to move forward with capital improvements
ROSTRAVER TWP. — Belle Vernon Area School District’s board of education voted Monday to issue bids for two more phases of facility improvements.
Phase 2 will include paving at the high school, middle school and elementary school; gym floor renovation at the elementary school; replacement of bleacher steps, railings and lockers at the high school; and bleacher replacement and gym floor refurbishment at the middle school for a projected cost of $556,000.
During Phase 3, the district will add more toilets and showers to the middle school; prep and install lockers in the old home economics wing; relocate the trainer’s room to the “old kitchen” at the middle school; update HVAC and lighting; and convert the middle school band room to a victor’s locker room. Phase 3 will cost the district around $258,000.
In addition, the board authorized Superintendent Dr. John Wilkinson to ask several vendors to inspect the middle school and provide estimates for the installation of an elevator.
“Currently, we don’t have any students with disabilities who need an elevator to get to the second floor,” said Dr. Wilkinson during the board’s monthly meeting. “But we want to have our facility upgraded in case there is a need for the elevator.”
Dr. Wilkinson added that it may cost around $150,000 for parts, labor and design of the middle school elevator.
Phase 1 involved demolition of a sports practice facility and part of the old Rostraver Middle School for $190,000.
