Family Area features animal acts and trapeze artists
The Family Area at this year’s Fayette County Fair will feature alligators, racing pigs and trapeze artists in shows aimed to entertain and delight fairgoers.
Kachunga and the Alligator return to the fair, an act that comes from Florida and began in 1982 as a public awareness program to bring alligators and other wildlife to schools to educate students.
The act’s website calls Kachunga “a real American Bushman who dares to step foot into the wet domain of the alligator. Watch in astonishment as he apprehends a ferocious man-eating reptile with his bare hands.”
Kachunga pits “his strength and agility against 9 feet, 300 pounds of lashing tail and gnashing jaws in a dangerous dance of reflexes and cunning.”
While sure to keep fairgoers on the edge of their seats, the website says the show is educational, funny and safe to view and that the alligators are treated with respect and care.
Kachunga will perform shows at 4:45, 6:15 and 7:45 p.m. daily throughout the fair, but there will be no show at 4:45 p.m. today.
Circus Dubois features circus stunts in a unique show that include juggling, balancing, hoops, a unicycle and high wire.
The act performs at 4:15, 5:45 and 7:15 p.m. daily from Thursday through Sunday, but there will be no 4:15 p.m. show today.
Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean is an aerial, high-wire act that includes acrobats performing on a steel cable. Originally from South America, the Pirates have performed around the world.
The act appears at 4:15, 5:45 and 7:15 p.m. daily from Monday through Aug. 5.
Pigs Gone Wild Racing Pigs is one of the fair’s most popular acts. Each year, the pigs take up a new theme. Past shows have included superheroes, famous princesses, Star Wars and the Pittsburgh Pirates. This year’s theme will be revealed at the fair.
Pigs will race at 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m. daily, but there will be no 4 p.m. show today.
Barn Yard Petting Zoo, which offers an opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of animals, will be in operation from 10 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. daily.
Daily shows also include R&S Woodcarving, returning throughout the fair to show off its marvelous skills. And the fair will offer fireworks at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.
