Uniontown Area seniors to receive diplomas
Members of the Uniontown Area High School class of 2017 will receive their diplomas at a graduation ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. today in the high school auditorium.
Addressing their classmates at the ceremony are valedictorian Evan Klatt and salutatorian Emily Sharp. Senior class president Allenah Delara is also scheduled to speak.
Klatt is a son of Ron and Susan Klatt. He captained the Academic League, Hometown Hi-Q Quiz Team, Math Team and Science Olympiad team. He also participated in Model U.N., Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Bible club. He is vice president of the National Honor Society and maintained a 4.5 GPA.
A Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete and B’nai B’rith Scholar/Athlete award-winner, Klatt’s other awards include the Challenge Program STEM Award, Fayette Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month, Uniontown Rotary Student of the Month, the Harvard Book Award, Marine Corps Academic Award and the AP Scholar with Honors Award.
Klatt attended Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week, Keystone Boys State and the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar. An Eagle Scout with Troop 608, he has volunteered for many community organizations. He has helped with events for the American Heart Association and the Fayette County Colon Cancer Network. He attends Great Bethel Baptist Church and has worked as a referee for Fayette County Youth Soccer club.
Earning varsity letters in four sports, Klatt was a three-time WPIAL qualifier and two-time PIAA state qualifier in cross country, serving as captain during his junior and senior years. The three-time WPIAL qualifier in swimming was captain during his senior season. He also captained the track and field team as a junior and played football during his senior year as an All-Conference place kicker.
Klatt has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, to study mechanical engineering.
Sharp is a daughter of Sean and Shelley Sharp of Chalk Hill. She was the recipient of the AP Scholar with Honors Award, the Daughters of the American Revolution History Award, the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award, the Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month and the Rotary Club Student of the Month.
Academically, Sharp was involved in Science Olympiad, Envirothon, Spanish Club and was president of the National Honors Society. She also participated in SADD, Interact Club, the Maroon Key Honor Society and was the statistician for the track and field team.
Sharp was a member of the drama club, performing in one-acts, show choir, spring musical and the WVU honors choir, and was a four-year member of the twirling squad, becoming feature twirler in her senior year.
Outside of academics, Sharp has played piano for 10 years. She volunteers at local churches and community dinners and has coordinated food drives for the Uniontown and Mountain Food Pantries.
In the fall, Sharp will attend Bucknell University, where she has been awarded the Dean’s Scholarship. She plans to major in biomedical engineering and will be working alongside the college’s dean of engineering on research projects prior to her first semester.
Delara is a niece of Dana and John Celaschi. She is a Fayette Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month, Rotary Club Student of the Month and a member of the Penn State 4.0 Club.
In school, Delara served as vice president of the Spanish Club, participated in Model U.N. and competed in several math competitions. She was a two-year member of the cross country team that qualified for WPIALS each season.
In her free time, Delara volunteers at the Uniontown Hospital. She plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall to major in biology/pre-med and will pursue a career in pediatric oncology.
